Michelin Releases Its New York City Bib Gourmand List

Tuesday, the 14th edition of Michelin’s Bib Gourmand for New York—also known as the acclaimed guide’s “cheap eats” list—was released. There are now 129 restaurants in the five boroughs, including 27 new spots. Last year there were 127 Bib Gourmands but only 14 new spots, which means a lot of restaurants were taken off the list, either because they closed, weren’t worthy, or moved up to Michelin-star status.

The chief criterion for Bib Gourmand winners are that $40 per person can get you a meal that includes two courses plus dessert or wine, before tax and tip. (Although if you put that to the test at several of these places, you’ll find that you will need a bit more cash if you want full reign of the menu.)

The list is determined by anonymous Michelin inspectors who visit the restaurants in the course of determining their famous star rating system.

This year’s number of relatively inexpensive places in New York gently bucks the trend, which has seen a slow but steady decrease in notable new places. In 2017 there were 132 restaurants in its guide. In 2016, 133 places made the cut. Meanwhile, the price of an entree in New York continues to rise; witness the $92 lamb chops at the Grill.

The full list is below; New York’s stars will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 6.
