TripAdvisor Looks to Restaurants for a Boost

Skift Take

Revenues are up 36 percent in TripAdvisor's non-hotel category, which includes restaurants.

— Erika Adams

Restaurants are good business for TripAdvisor, according to the company’s latest earnings report. TripAdvisor reported a seated diner growth of 30 percent in the past quarter, showing that more people are booking reservations through TripAdvisor and then actually following through on those bookings.

The growth is not necessarily stemming from the U.S., however. TripAdvisor Restaurants counts a large user base in Europe and Australia due to the fact that it owns La Fourchette, El Tenedor, Iens, and other small, country-specific restaurant reservation services.

The uptick in users bolstered TripAdvisor’s revenues in the sector, which includes money collected for each seated diner, as well as advertising fees from restaurants featured on its platform. In the non-hotel category (the company doesn’t break out restaurants individually), TripAdvisor reported revenues of $79 million, up 36 percent compared to last year. TripAdvisor also noted that the restaurants category growth was influenced by an improved user experience, more mobile bookings, and more restaurant options available on the platform.
