DoorDash Partners With Wyndham Rewards at 3,700 U.S. Hotels

No room service? No problem.

DoorDash has partnered with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts to offer free food delivery to hotel guests at 3,700 properties in the U.S.

Think of it as room service 2.0, giving hotel guests quick and easy access to local restaurants in partnership with one of the largest third-party delivery services in the country. Wyndham owns hotel brands like Days Inn, Super 8, and La Quinta — properties travelers are more likely to associate with affordable stays with pared-down amenities than high-quality meals.

Matt Rotella, head of corporate development at DoorDash, said this partnership is the company’s first within the travel and hospitality segment. DoorDash features a number of recognizable national chains on its platform, including Papa John’s and Chipotle, a good way to appeal to potential first-time customers.

“With its best-in-class selection of restaurants and a rapidly expanding footprint, DoorDash enables us to provide an unparalleled array of in-room dining options,” said Eliot Hamlisch, Wyndham’s senior vice president, worldwide loyalty and partnerships, in a statement, calling the deal “a big win.”

Rewards

There’s little stopping hotel guests from ordering delivery to their hotel rooms, save logistical issues and rules surrounding delivery driver access to hotel hallways, but an official partnership like this will make it more convenient for guests.

At the crux of this partnership is high visibility for DoorDash in the 3,700 hotels it will serve. According to a DoorDash spokesperson, the program will be marketed via several channels, including in participating hotel rooms.

Guests enrolled in the Wyndham Rewards loyalty program will also see benefits, earning 250 points for each DoorDash order placed during their stay. Customers new to DoorDash will receive a 2,000 point bonus after placing their first order. (Orders must originate on the Wyndham Rewards site in order to qualify for the points.)

There is no end date for DoorDash’s free delivery to participating properties, nor Wyndham Rewards points accrual.

Will Travel For Food

According to Skift Research, 43 percent of recent leisure travelers have planned a vacation with food as the main purpose. Travel and restaurants are inextricably linked, and it’s not just because travelers need to eat (though, they do). It’s a great opportunity for local Wyndham properties to insert themselves into guests’ dining decisions — without having to handle a plate of food.

Wyndham is not the only hotel group to implement such a plan. InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) launched a similar partnership with OpenTable and Grubhub in 2017, offering points to loyalty members for booking tables at restaurants or ordering Grubhub delivery through IHG’s own channels.

TripAdvisor partners with most major delivery services (including DoorDash) to allow travelers to quickly order delivery from local restaurants via TripAdvisor listings.

And consolidation in the space is also providing grounds for easy hotel-restaurant partnerships. In January, Kayak announced that users could redeem OpenTable Dining Points for discounted hotel stays, a manifestation of OpenTable’s new corporate structure, with OpenTable executives reporting through Kayak’s leadership team.
